FIRST NATION CULTURAL GUIDES
Job Overview
- To promote the culture and history of the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation and British Columbia First Nations.
- To share and demonstrate First Nation cultural history by describing points of interest on Indian Arm/surrounding area and advising on the cultural history of the area through song, stories and legends.
- To move equipment, prep. equipment for programs, clean and put equipment away in secure storage after program.
- To promote efficient, hospitable, informative and pleasant customer contact.
- To accompany guests on the water in either the 25 ft. ocean-going canoes or kayaks.
Qualifications
Canoe, kayaking and cultural training will be available!
- Willing to learn and convey First Nation cultural history.
- Able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Willing to speak in front of large groups.
- Good customer service skills.
- Strong work ethic. Showing up to work prepared and on time is mandatory.
- On water skills in canoes or kayaks is an asset. Please clearly state if you have this qualification on your resume.
- Prepared and willing to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability or willingness to sing Coast Salish traditional songs solo is an asset. Please clearly state if you have this qualification on your resume.
- First aid certification is an asset. Please clearly state if you have this qualification on your resume.
- Food Safe certification is an asset. Please clearly state if you have this qualification on your resume.
- The position also requires that all guides be in good physical condition.
Duties & Responsibilities
- To tell Coast Salish legends on and off the water and represent Takaya Tours and Deep Cove Kayak in a positive manner at all times.
- To relay information regarding Coast Salish culture and history.
- To give safety orientations to clients.
- To always greet customers with a friendly attitude and answer their questions accurately.
- To maintain the cleanliness of the canoe and kayak facilities.
- To participate in staff meetings, sharing ideas for improved efficiency and productivity.
- To show concern for the guests’ needs, providing assistance with enthusiasm.
- To be in proper uniform with appropriate staff clothing and footwear for the day’s weather conditions.
- To co-operate with all company employees and supervisors.
- To arrive at work on time and when scheduled.
- To work between canoe and kayak operations and wherever needed.
- To clean and wash equipment on a regular basis as directed.
- To ensure the proper use of equipment to avoid any damage.
- To prepare and serve food when necessary.
- To interact with clients in a professional manner at all times.
- To assist co-workers when and where needed.
- To ensure the safety of customers and guides at all times.
